Love Is a Fallacy?

I read Psalm 139 today. Amazing.

When we were in Hawaii, we went to a little Community Church the Sunday before we left. It was Valentine's Day and so, of course, the Pastor preached on love. But it wasn't quite the typical "love" sermon. I really appreciated it.

He started out, "Do you know what I pray every morning when I wake up? 'God, reveal to me how much you love me.'"

I thought that was an interesting thing to pray. To me, it even sounded a little self-centered. But just as if he had read my thoughts (or perhaps God did), the Pastor said,

"That sounds selfish, doesn't it? But if I start my day knowing and remembering God's unfathomable, unconditional, unfailing love for me... I am secure, I am humble. I am confident in who I am in God, and I am trusting in His control over my life. I am free. When I remember His love for me, I remember to show His love to the people around me. And when I show His love to the people around me, I am living His love."

What kind of love can do all that?

I am someone who is scared of loving, and even of being loved. Ridiculous, I know. I don't like chick flicks (Pride and Prejudice does not count), I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day, and it bothers me to no end when people go from this person to that person to the NEXT person in dating. Love... psch.

If I'm scared of love, I think it is because I don't know what real love is. Chick flicks, Valentine's Day, stupid dating relationships---they are all false interpretations of love; confused and illusioned farces of something real and genuine.

Well, guess what? I know someone who knows what real love is. He knows all about it. He invented it. He IS love.

This morning, He revealed to me how much He loves me when I read Psalm 139 again.

"O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up. You know my every thought when far away. You chart the path ahead of me and tell me when to stop and rest. Every moment you know where I am. You know what I am going to say, even before I say it, Lord. You both proceed and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to know!" (Verses 1-5)

Go on, get your Bible and read the whole thing for yourself. And may the one who revealed His love for me, reveal His love for you, also.
